Recently I have been struggling with when is it OK not to give what is expected.

My husband and I have had a few times where we were called to bless someone more than the usual giving that He leads us to do on a daily basis. When I say giving, it does include finances, but Holy Spirit has taught us that Love is given in many more ways than through money. Then from time to time it happens that what was originally a gift becomes an expectancy. As humans we are so prone to turning our attention from The Giver to the instrument and in that moment offense is often caused in some form and relationships are damaged.

So, yet again I was faced with a gift turning expectancy and I asked the Father what would be the correct way of handling this. Father then graciously reminded me of the scripture of the woman who gave her last penny in Mark 2:41-44.

When I asked if that is what He wants me to do, since it would be such a case if I were to honour the expectancy, He again graciously reminded me of scripture but this time of Acts 3:6.

“But Peter said, I do not have silver or gold but what I do have, I give to you ; In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk”

And the Lord continued to explain that we are not to give what man expects from us. We are to give what the Father intends. In the end it is He who knows what is truly needed.

Acts 4:19 Peter and John answered them, “Decide for yourselves whether God wants people to listen to you rather than to him.

Matthew 7:24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

John 12:43 – For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God

Colossians 3:23 – And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men

Acts 5:29 – Then Peter and the [other] apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men

Colossians 3:22-25 – Servants, obey in all things [your] masters according to the flesh; not with eye service, as men pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God

Then the Father reminded me how in the past He supplied and even supplied greater than I would be able to do at that time to those who did choose to put their trust and expectancy in Him instead of me. Sometimes saying “no” in love pushes the person to keep their focus on God instead of man – and the Father does not disappoint!

Point is, the law-of-giving was never our portion – unless you are a born Jew – and even then the law was fulfilled by Jesus Christ .

Matt 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them

Rom 10:4 Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes

Now there is but one law, or then EXPECTANCY, and that is to LOVE. Therefore, allow this Word to liberate and set you free from all condemnation and only focus on God’s love, first for you and out of that, love will come forth like a well of living water aiding those around you as you go about your daily walk.

Bask in His unending Love.
